How often to clean washing machine parts is four different answers, not one. Run a tub-clean cycle monthly. Wipe the gasket weekly. Rinse the detergent drawer monthly. Clean the drain pump filter every one to three months. Leave the door open after every wash — that one is free and does the most.
Almost every page on this subject gives you a single number, usually “once a month”, and that number is only about the drum. The drum is one of four things that get dirty, and the other three are on entirely different clocks. Worse, “monthly” is a calendar answer to a question your machine answers by counting loads.
Four jobs, four clocks
Here is how often to clean washing machine parts, all four of them, in one place. Samsung publishes almost exactly this routine, which is a useful sanity check on advice that otherwise circulates unsourced: “Leaving the washer’s door and the detergent drawer open helps air them out and prevents moisture from lingering long enough to let mold or mildew form,” the drawer itself wants “wiping it dry after every wash session” plus a deep clean “at least once per month,” Self Clean is “the primary method of cleaning the interior of your washer once per month,” and the pump filter needs cleaning “at least once per month or approximately every 40 washes, whichever is more frequent” (how to clean your Samsung washer).
The last row is the one people skip for years, because it is the only job that involves a tray and a small flood. It is also the one that produces the smell everybody blames on the drum.
How often to clean washing machine parts, by component
Each of these gets dirty in a different way and at a different speed, which is why one interval cannot cover them.
| Part | Interval | Why that interval | If you skip it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Door and gasket fold | Weekly | It holds standing water after every wash | Black speckling, then odour that survives a tub clean |
| Drum and internal hoses | Monthly | Biofilm builds on surfaces you never see | Musty laundry, grey marks, longer cycles |
| Detergent drawer and its recess | Monthly | Softener and powder set hard as they dry | Poor dispensing, then a drawer that overflows |
| Drain pump filter (most front-loaders) | Every 1–3 months | Lint, hair and coins collect there and sit in water | Slow draining, then a smell like stagnant water |
Front-loaders need the weekly wipe far more than top-loaders do, and that is a design consequence rather than a defect. A sealed door and a low-water wash leave damp rubber in the dark. It is a well-documented characteristic: Whirlpool settled biofilm class actions covering 5.6 million front-loaders, and LG settled a parallel case covering several hundred thousand more. If your front-loader smells, you are not doing laundry wrong.
Your machine counts washes, not days
This is the part that changes the answer, and no page in the top results mentions it.
Where a machine has a cleaning reminder, the light is a counter, not a sensor. Samsung’s fires after roughly 20 washes on a top-loader and 40 on a front-loader. It has no idea whether your drum is clean. It has counted.
That matters because “once a month” assumes an average household. Run two loads a week and monthly is more often than your machine thinks is necessary. Run ten a week and you will hit 40 loads in a month on a front-loader — so monthly is exactly right, and if you run fifteen, monthly is already late.
The honest rule: clean the drum every 30 to 40 loads, and use the calendar only as a reminder to count. If your machine has the light, let it do the counting for you — it is doing the arithmetic you would otherwise skip.
What actually goes in a tub-clean cycle
Nothing, on most machines. The cycle is hot water, a long soak and a high-speed rinse, and it is designed to run empty. Samsung’s instruction is simply “To run a Self Clean cycle, first make sure the washer is empty,” and then “You don’t need to add cleaner when running Self Clean” — no additive at all. Some Samsung machines call the same cycle Pure Cycle or Self Clean+, which catches people out when they cannot find the button (how to clean your Samsung washer).
If your machine has no dedicated cycle, the substitute is the hottest wash it offers, empty. What you put in it is covered properly in how to clean a washing machine, and what the cycle does and does not reach is in washer tub clean cycle explained.
One safety line, and it is not negotiable: run bleach and vinegar as separate cycles. Never together, and never with detergent. Mixing cleaning chemicals in a closed drum can produce harmful fumes.
Signs you have already left it too long
You do not need a schedule if the machine is telling you. Any of these means the interval has been missed rather than that something has failed:
- Clean laundry that smells damp within a day of drying. Biofilm, transferred to the fabric.
- Black or grey speckling in the gasket fold, or on light-coloured items after a wash.
- A drawer that will not dispense properly, or that leaves powder behind every time.
- A drain that has slowly got slower over months rather than stopping suddenly. That is a filter, and it is the job on the longest clock.
The gasket is the fastest of these to fix and the most commonly ignored — the fold has to be pulled back, not just wiped across. There is a full procedure in how to clean a washing machine gasket.
FAQ
How often should I run a tub clean cycle?
Monthly for an average household, or every 30 to 40 loads if you want the accurate version. Heavy users should count loads rather than days.
Do top-loaders need cleaning as often as front-loaders?
The drum, yes. The weekly gasket wipe, no — a top-loader has no door seal holding water, which is why it is the less smelly design and the reason front-loader owners feel unfairly treated.
Can I skip it if I only wash on hot?
Mostly, and this is the one genuine shortcut. Hot washes and powder detergent leave far less residue than cold washes with liquid. You still need the filter and the drawer.
Does a washing machine cleaner tablet work better than the cycle alone?
For a machine that is already bad, a cleaner helps. For maintenance on a machine you keep on schedule, the empty hot cycle is doing the work and the tablet is optional. Whether the tablets are worth buying at all is a separate question, and the answer this site reached is less flattering than the packaging.
How often should I clean the drain pump filter?
Every one to three months on a front-loader. Sooner if you wash pet bedding, towels or anything that sheds — those fill it far faster than clothing does.
My machine has no clean cycle. What do I do?
Run the hottest wash available with the drum empty and nothing in the drawer. That is the same mechanism under a different name.
