Open it and look inside first. An unlined, unpadded blazer in cotton, linen or a washable wool blend goes in the machine on cold, delicate, lowest spin, in a mesh bag, and dries on a wide hanger. A lined one with a padded shoulder is a suit jacket wearing a different name, and the answer there is the dry cleaner. How to wash a blazer is a question about construction first, fabric second.
The ranking pages all start at the care label, then go straight to fabric. Plenty of blazers have no label left in them.
Three tests that tell you whether yours can be washed
Hold the jacket open. Test one: is there a lining? A full lining across the back and body means structured tailoring, and the layers under it shrink at different rates in water. Test two: pinch the chest panel, two inches below the collarbone. A stiff sheet separate from the cloth means an interlining. Test three: squeeze the shoulder seam. Padding is a shape that was built in, and it will not survive being tumbled wet.
Three noes and you have a soft jacket that behaves like a heavy shirt. One yes and you are in how to wash a suit territory, where the answer is usually a professional clean.
Unlined and unstructured are not the same word
Shopping sites use these interchangeably and they mean different things. The tailor Blugiallo draws the line cleanly: “While unconstructed refers to the lack of internal canvas, an unlined jacket means that the inner fabric is left bare” (Blugiallo — the art of jacket construction). An unconstructed jacket has “no internal canvas or padding” and a “cardigan-like feel”. A jacket can be unlined and still canvassed, or lined and completely soft.
There is a trap in the middle. Half-canvas construction — the default at most price points — runs canvas from the shoulder to just below the chest, and in Blugiallo’s words “the rest of the jacket is fused”. A jacket sold as canvassed may still be glued below the chest, and glue is the layer water lifts.
How to wash a blazer at home, start to finish
Machine-washable tailoring is a real category, not a gamble. Woolmark says “Machine washable Merino wool clothing – such as suits, jackets and trousers – are suitable for cleaning in a domestic washing machine then hanging on a line to dry”, using “easy-care treated fibres to prevent felting shrinkage” and a “polyurethane polymer” finish (Woolmark — machine washable woven). Interventions at the mill, which no cold wash reproduces.
For a blazer that passed all three tests: empty the pockets, fasten the buttons, turn it inside out, mesh bag, on its own. Wool setting if you have one — Woolmark’s fallback is “the cold water wash or wash cycle for delicates” (Woolmark — how to wash wool) — mild liquid detergent, no softener, lowest spin. (Which wash cycle to use settles which programme is genuinely gentlest.) Hang it wet on a broad hanger, shape the shoulders by hand. Never the dryer: tumble heat shrinks a jacket out of fit, and out of fit is finished.
Most blazers fail test one
Open yours, find a lining, and you have your answer in five seconds. The unlined blazer that washes beautifully is real, just rarer than the internet implies. A wool one wants the care on how to wash a wool sweater minus the laying-flat: woven tailoring dries on a hanger.
FAQ
Can you machine wash a blazer?
If it is unlined, unpadded and has no stiff interlining in the chest, yes — cold, delicate, lowest spin, mesh bag. If it is lined or padded, the internal layers shrink at different rates and the shape collapses. No cycle setting prevents that.
How do I know if my blazer is dry clean only?
The care label first. With no label, read the construction: a lining, a stiff chest panel or a padded shoulder each point to professional cleaning, because each is an internal layer that reacts to water differently from the cloth.
Can you put a blazer in the dryer?
No. Tumble heat shrinks tailored cloth unevenly and softens adhesive interlining, and a chest panel that has shrunk cannot be let back out. Hang it damp on a wide hanger in moving air.
How often does a blazer need washing?
Less often than it feels like. Airing it overnight and brushing the collar and cuffs handles most of it.
Can you hand wash a blazer instead?
For an unlined one, yes, and it is gentler than any cycle. Cool water, mild detergent, no rubbing, then press the water out between towels and hang it. Wringing is how sleeves come out twisted.
